MONOVISION LASIK
An Alternative for Correcting Refractive Error and Age Related Farsightedness

What is Monovision?

Virtually people over the age of 38 are affected with age-related farsightedness (presbyopia), and need to use glasses for reading in addition to the glasses needed for distance. Therefore, they may need two separate prescriptions to see clearly, one for the distance and a different one for reading. Monovision is an alternative for LASIK patients who are affected with nearsightedness or inborn farsightedness simultaneously with age-related farsightedness. This is done by completely correcting the refractive error in the dominant eye so that it can see clearly in the distance, while leaving a small amount of nearsightedness in the non-dominant eye, in order to allow for near vision as well. The dominant eye should be able to see well in the distance but not so well up close, while the non-dominant eye should be able to see enough up close to allow reading, but not as well in the distance as the dominant eye. When both eyes are used together, both reading and distance vision should be comfortably usable. This will enable the patient to see reasonably well both in the distance and up close, without needing the help of spectacles to carry out simple daily routines, such as reading price tags or menus. Depending on individual lifestyle, some patients will want "night driving" glasses or "sewing glasses" for occasional use. Monovision has been used successfully for many years using contact lenses as a way of correcting vision. With LASIK advances, Monovision is now the new trend for people with near vision difficulties

Some Facts about Monovision

Getting Monovision LASIK is advantageous in many aspects concerning the convenience afforded in everyday activities, but it also has its drawbacks, the first being that far vision may not be perfect, especially at nighttime or in areas with little lighting. The second drawback is that near vision will typically work well for only short periods. In instances where patients need to read, do some craft work, use a computer for long periods of time, or read small letters, spectacles that aid near vision may be needed to help relax the eyes and prevent tiring.

Our current study (group study of 50 people) from 2006 shows of the people who chose Monovision, overall 96.3% are happy and without glasses.
