Annual Eye Check-ups |
TRSC’s Medical Team suggests:
| - All people are at risk for developing sight-threatening eye diseases, regardless of whether they need glasses or not. You might be wondering if you really do need regular eye examinations if you don’t feel any abnormalities in your eyes or your vision. The truth is, some eye diseases do not present with any symptoms until they are in a very advanced stage, when it may be too late for effective treatment. Periodic eye check-ups and preventative screenings are the best way to ensure that your eyes are healthy and will remain so for your lifetime. For people under forty with no predisposition to eye disease, eye examinations are recommended at least every 2 years. However, predisposing factors to eye disease such as a family history of glaucoma or retinal detachment, or a high nearsighted or farsighted prescription should warrant more frequent examination as directed by your doctor. |
- If you're forty and older. The risks of many eye diseases increase with age. For example, glaucoma is found in about 0.05% of the people over forty who do not have any eye symptoms. That is a low percentage, but the consequences of glaucoma are severe and permanent. Don’t take that chance! People forty and older should have their eyes examined at least once a year.
|
An annual eye check-up should include:
- visual acuity
- refraction
- intraocular pressure
- visual fields
- complete examination of the eyes in the microscope
- dilation (to check the health of the inside of the eye) |
