 Femtosecond LASIK

What is Carl Zeiss FemtoLASIK?

Femtosecond LASIK is a technologically advanced form of LASIK which has gained popularity worldwide among both patients and surgeons, and may be considered the future of LASIK. The FemtoLASIK procedure is slightly different than conventional LASIK in the first step of the LASIK surgery. When creating the corneal flap, FemtoLASIK uses the Carl Zeiss (Germany) VisuMax femtosecond laser instead of the conventional microkeratome blade. This makes FemtoLASIK a bladeless, all-laser form of LASIK. Once the corneal flap is made, the Carl Zeiss MEL 80 excimer laser is used to provide wavefront correction which will give patients the clear vision without glasses they are dreaming of. The advanced technology of the Carl Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser allows for a smoother flap interface, and its patented curved contact surface increases patient comfort by inducing minimal pressure on the cornea.

Why Did TRSC Choose the Carl Zeiss Visumax femtosecond Laser?

Our medical team chose the VisuMax over other femtosecond lasers for several reasons. Of all the femtosecond lasers on the market today, the VisuMax has the highest resolution, meaning that it will allow for the highest quality and most precisely cut flaps. The VisuMax uses the lowest energy necessary to create tissue separation, which will leave the cornea with the least collateral damage possible. The VisuMax is also preferred over other femtosecond lasers because its corneal contact surface is specifically designed with a curved surface in order to maximize patient comfort and minimize the increase of intraocular pressure during the flap creation process. Since the contact surface is a better match for the natural shape of the cornea, the cornea will not be smashed into a flat position to create suction when the cut is made. This means the patient will feel less pressure and not have the “blackout” which is normally experienced with the use of the microkeratome and other femtosecond laser systems. Lastly, unlike the Intralase and Ziemer LDV femtosecond lasers which can only make two-dimensional cuts, the Carl Zeiss VisuMax has the ability to make precise corneal cuts in all three dimensions. This means that everything down to the thickness and angle of the flap edges can be customized for every patient, maximizing chances for the best treatment results.

Advantages of the Carl Zeiss Visumax femtosecond Laser

  • Highest precision of any femtosecond laser on the market
  • Lowest energy femtosecond laser causing the least collateral damage
  • Curved corneal contact surface for improved patient comfort
  • 3D cutting ability allows for a more customized corneal flap
